URBAN BYPASS: The expansion and contraction of urban systems
Before imaging a future car free scenario we attempted to define the problem in terms of congestion, access, pollution, land use and sustainability. We wanted to challenge the popular notion that cars are bad and should not occupy the city. When Imagining a car free city we discussed the the critical problem of how to service the city without the use of vehicles such as cars, taxis, vans, light trucks etc.
If the future city is car free does it then require an advanced delivery system or is there another solution that still allows service vehicles similar to the current models?
Our focus on service delivery of an urban system was coupled with the assumption that the city will continue to gain density and verticality as the population increases. During our discussion I asked what the city might look like when the Brisbane population was 10 million or even 50 million. This question forced me to think about the efficiency of urban systems as well thinking about existing systems, natural and artificial that are self contained and efficient.
