WK03 Reading: Shearing Layers

I have been thinking about the morphology of cities and the buildings that form them, however, I had not given much thought to the lifecycle of internal layers until this reading. The story of the Cliff House was fascinating in the way the building changed form and character along with the ideas of the each new owner.

It seems superficial sustainability is most often applied to the internal layers of a building though I'm curious to what sustainability actually means in terms of building the structure in the first place. Is it the embodied energy in the materials that are most important or the actual building type and the socio-cultural purpose it serves over time?
